Tom and Jerry

Tom and jerry was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.Joseph Barbera, a storyman and character designer, paired up with a William Hanna (a director) and created (what would later be known as Tom and Jerry) a  cat-and-mouse cartoon. The first cartoon was titled ‘Puss Gets the Boot’ and was released on February 10, 1940 in theatres. To make the show more succesfull Hanna and Barbera held a contest to give the cat and mouse a new name and look. Animator John Carr won the contest by suggesting that the name be changed to Tom and Jerry, The series then went into production between 1940 and 1957. In 1960, Czech-based animation director, Gene Deitch from Rembrandt Films produced new Tom and Jerry shorts. 13 shorts were released, however the episodes were not very favorably received by the general audience. In the early 1963, Chuck Jones, who was fired from Warner Bros. Cartoons, started his own animation studio and produced a total of 34 Tom and Jerry shorts. The main characters were given a changed appearance, with Tom getting thicker eyebrows, a less complex look, sharper ears and furrier cheeks. Jerry got larger eyes and ears, a lighter brown color and a sweeter Porky Pig-like expression. The year 1965 saw the Hanna and Barbera cartoon series airing on television, in heavily edited form. It began in 1960, 144 episodes written and directed by Hanna and Barbera, longside this new shorts were produced by Rembrandt Films ed by Gene Deitch in Eastern Europe. Tom and Jerry then returned to Chuck Jone's Sib-Tower 12 productions in 1963 until 1967, at this point 161 episodes had been created.Tom and Jerry then returned 3 years later in 1970's untill 1990's, which were produced by Hanna-Barbera and Filmation Studios. On top of making animated shorts, they also created feature films. The series in 2000 was named as the ‘Greatest Television Shows of All Time’ by TIME.

The show is based around a mischievous dwelling feline (Tom) and a timid, kind hearted mouse (Jerry), In each episode Tom is shown trying to catch Jerry, however there is no particular reason why, unless you treat Tom and Jerry as what they are...a cat and mouse, in that case then there is. Most cases Tom is unable to catch Jerry simply because Jerry is smarter and much more cunning for Tom to handle. However, sometimes when one of the two is in serious danger, they end up being friends and try to help eachother out.

Tom & Jerry  are said to have had the most violence ever in he field of animation though never involving blood or gore in any scenes. And do so because of this, and other reasons, such as whenever Tom or Jerry were in an explosion, their faces would be coloured completely in black, as well as other ethnic stereotypes that were made fun of, such as the black maid, In one case, the character was reanimated as a slim, young, white lady.Because of this Tom and Jerry was not considered politically correct in later years, Like a number of other animated cartoons in the 1930s to 1950s
